Main Assignment-Career Discourse (pg. 21)
An important discovery I've made in my university major was which major was able to hold my interest. I began my collage career as undeclared, and basically followed the core class curriculum for a year. In order to transfer universities, I was required to pick a major, which is when I eagerly skimmed the enormous book of majors and minors. I always knew communications was what I was aiming for, to stick to that department in the business world, and work in Manhattan at some point. As I found that section, I skipped over broadcast, because the news was not my thing, and stumbled upon visual communications. Magazines, web designs, all things I figured would be included within this major; so I chose it. A year went by and I only took one actual visual communication class, and I hated it. I figured it was only a core class that all journalism majors had to take, but as my junior year rolled around, I found myself absolutely dreading my advanced vis comm class. I could not get a higher grade than an 80 and hated everything about graphic design. I scheduled an appointment with my advisor and explained my dilemma to him. With the snap of a finger my major was changed and I was on to advertising. I couldn't have been more thrilled to never have to take another visual communications class in my life, and am excited to explore advertising and graduate with that degree.
